In 1991, German-Malaysian Institute (GMI), a hub for advanced skills training was established. GMI provides a comprehensive and balanced training of unique theoretical and hands-on approaches. The institute provides a broad-based engineering education, with opportunities for specialization and self-directed learning and development. GMI offers diverse training programmes and services consisting of full time diploma programmes, a pre-university programme(A-Level), skills upgrading technical courses, train-the-trainers programmes, and industrial consultancy and services.
The birth of GMI was the outcome of a joint venture between the Governments of Malaysia and Germany. GMI is governed by a 10-member Board of Directors comprising representatives from the governments, public and industrial bodies. The institution was set up as a Company Limited by Guarantee whereby the founders are Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) and the Malaysian German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MGCC), and its implementing agencies are MARA and German Technical Corporation (GTZ). GMI had its first student enrollment in 1992 and the growing number of enrollment prevails.
The main objective of GMI is to meet the demands and needs of domestic industrial sectors by producing graduates who are notably pertinent to manufacturing and engineering industries. Throughout its years of existence, GMI has proven its eminence and success in generating skilful and competent trainees; namely in design, manufacturing, operation, maintenance, fault analysis and complex production plant repair, machinery and tools.By complementing the theoretical know-why with the practical know-how in their fields of specialization, GMI graduates and participants of various GMI programmes walk into the working world with an edge and a strong foothold – a set of characters that has distinctively set them apart from others in the industrial sectors.
