Industrial Electronics Department |

Introduction
Industrial Electronics Department is one of the training departments in the institute. We provide a comprehensive and balanced training of unique theoretical and hands-on approaches. We provide a broad-based engineering education, with opportunities for specialization and self-directed learning and development. Our programmes are designed in a special way as to bring out new breeds of technologist who possess the analytical skill to deal with problems holistically.
We undertake the responsibility to conduct training related to Industrial Electronics for full time diploma programmes targeted to qualified school-leavers as well as trainees from skill centres and technical skill upgrading short courses for public. In addition, we welcome ideations and realizations of joint-ventures from organizations and industries in developing and enhancing new and current technologies related to this department. In materializing these joint-ventures, our specialists and experts are readily available and vice versa.
Our laboratories are equipped with actual industrial instruments such as Programmable Logic Control (PLC), Hydraulics and Pneumatics, Robotics and CIM, Instrumentation and Control and DCS. The fusion of advanced and up-to-date equipment and facilities offers a dynamic environment and hence able to meet the ever-changing demands of industry.
The department consists of four technology sections:- Automation and Mechatronics Technology (AMT)
- Process Instrumentation and Control (PIC)
- Electronics System and Communication (ESC)
- Computing and Network Technology (CNT)
Automation & Mechatronics Techonology
Automation & Mechatronics Techonology section offers expertise in automation and mechatronics technologies. This section comprises staff from various academic and skills backgrounds.
The establishment of this section is to facilitate educating Industrial Electronics diploma students specializing in Mechatronics with various related disciplines such as Electronics, Mechanical, Control and Programming. In order to take that challenge, the multi training approach adopted by GMI is applied and at the same time industry standards hardware and software are embedded in all training laboratories.
An efficient training approach supported by established cooperation with well known industrial companies such as Siemens, Festo, Bosch Rexroth and ABB resulted in the birth of GMI graduates, well known for their high level of skills in handling components the related brand names, who easily adapt themselves with brand names outside the GMI circle. To complement that, industrial-based software such as Solidworks, RobotStudio and Simatic S7 in our CAD, Robotics and PLC laboratories are used by our dedicated trainers in sharing their skills and imparting knowledge.
The hardware and software are not only applied during training, but also by the students in the progress of completing their Final Year Project. For example, Mechatronics students use the Solidworks software intensively in designing the mechanical components during their project proposal and implementation.
With an attractive background, it is beyond doubt that the AMT team has made some important achievements over the last five years. In 2007, two trainers gained 3rd and 5th position in the national My Skill Competition under the Mechatronics Category and in 2009, one of the final year projects emerged the champion in the National Industrial Skills and Creativity Competition.
Electronics System and Communication
Electronics System and Communication section offers expertise in electronics, electrical, PIC, communication and information systems. The main objectives of the establishment of this section is to facilitate educating Industrial Electronics diploma students specialing in Electronics and Information Technology in fundamental subjects of electrical and electronics such as Electrical, Electronics, Digital Systems, Computer Interfacing Technology, Communications and Microcontroller. These subjects are aided by the use of didactic equipment to prepare them with adequate hand-on-skills for their future job demands. This section also provides hands-on training in short courses to cater to the needs of industries in upgrading their staff technical skills. Among the short courses offered are electronics, microcontroller, microprocessor, PIC microcontroller, communication technology, and Power Electronics and Drive Technology.
In keeping up with the increasing complexity in Electronics and Communication technologies, a liaison with industries is established by providing technical consultancy and invention of commercialized project by students under close supervision of our staff to suit the demand of the collaborated industries. This mechanism enhances the technical competitiveness of the staff in technology and innovation up to date with the latest trend and demand.
Process Instrumentation & Control
Process Instrumentation & Control Section offers the expertise in the area of technology applied in various process plants such as food industries, chemical plants, oil and gas manufacturing, steel manufacturing and others.
The establishment of this section is to facilitate in preparing and educating Industrial Electronics diploma students specializing in Process Instrumentation & Control with the fundamentals right up to the technological advancement in the subjects like Electrical, Electronics, Computer Monitoring and Interfacing Technology, Process Control and Instrumentation, Sensor Technology, Process Technology, Process Parameters, Process Measurements, Process Drawings and Planning, and Distributed Control System. These subjects are aided by the use of didactical training equipment, authentic industrial instrumentation and its application in plant operation which is designed for easy understanding and adaptation. This section also provides short courses to cater for the needs of industries in upgrading their staff. Among the short courses offered are introduction to Virtual Instrumentation & Measurement (LabView), Sensor Technology, Basic Instrumentation Calibration, Industrial Process Control & Instrumentation, Basic Distributed Control System (SIEMEN), Domestic Electrical Installation, Low Voltage Switch Gear and Motor Control, Protection Devices in Electrical Installation, and Charge man AO Preparatory Course.
In keeping up with the increasing and evolving technologies, a liaison with industries is established by providing technical consultancy and undertaking of commercialized projects by students with close supervision by our staff, are provided to match the demands of the collaborating industries. This mechanism enhances the technical competitiveness of the staff in technology and innovation updated with the latest trend and demand.
Computing & Network Technology
In the field of computer and networking, Network Security comprises the provisions made in an underlying computer network infrastructure, policies adopted by the network administrator to protect the network (LAN, WAN & MAN) and the network-accessible data or resources from unauthorized access or intruders (hackers). Securing a network covers the physical security to the system integrity checking and intrusion detection systems.
The Computing and Network Section in GMI offers expertise in the area of Computer, Information and Network Security, Wireless Security, Open Source System, Database System, Vulnerability Assessment and Forensic. The Technical Training Officers are professionally certified mainly in the area of networking, server administration and database management system.
This section also provides a hands-on training approach in short courses to cater to the needs of industries in upgrading their staff. Among the short courses offered are:
- Linux System Administration
- Linux Network Administration
- Interactive Multimedia Development
- Web Application
- JAVA Beginner, Intermediate and Web Services
- Enterprise Switch and Router Test Solutions
- Secured Network Design
- Network Forensic and Analysis
In keeping up with the rapid change in technology and IT, in Computing & Network section, a liaison with industries is done whereby technical consultancy and undertaking of commercialized projects by GMI students, under close supervision of our Technical Training Officers, are provided in matching the demand of the collaborated industries and partners.
