The Campus

In realizing a vision to be an industrialized nation by 2020, the government of Malaysia, with support and assistance from the government of Germany, set out to form German-Malaysian Institute or better known as GMI.  This establishment was borne in 1991 as a centre for advanced skills training; offering intensive and specialized courses with practical and theoretical input in the fields of Industrial Electronics and Production Technology.  In 1992, GMI received its pioneer batch of 52 trainees.

GMI is governed by a Board of Directors, comprising representatives from the industry and government bodies.  The institute was founded by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) and the Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce (MGCC) as a Company Limited by Guarantee.  The institute was officially launched by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed, Malaysia’s fourth Prime Minister, on September 1, 1991.

In undertaking the task to prepare a skilled workforce for the nation as we gear up towards the year 2020, GMI aptly paves the way through her various programmes – diploma programmes, pre-university programme, train-the-trainers programme, short-term technology-related courses, and industrial project and consultancy.
To cater for the growing number of enrolment and to remain competitive, GMI has strategically relocated to an education hub in Kajang.  Neighbouring other reputable education institutions, the growth of GMI is buoyed by the availability of reliable public transportation modes.  The hourly Rapid KL bus travels from GMI, making brief stops at UKM Komuter station and Kajang Bus Terminal, en route Kajang town, while KLIA is only a 40-minute drive away from the institute.

Majestically standing on a 75-acre piece of land is an administration block, training blocks, trainee apartment complex, a surau, a staff residence complex, a sports complex, a multipurpose hall, a chiller plant and four retention ponds, is divided into five zones for administration purposes.  Zone A encircles the trainee apartment complex and a surau (blocks A1-A7), Zone B , Zone C, Zone D and Zone E.

The Administration, Finance and Student Affairs Department (AFSA) faces the main entrance of the institute as a welcoming gesture to guests and visitors alike.  The building accommodates four administration sections, a 300-seater auditorium and an exhibition hall. The Resources Development Centre Department, situated at Kompleks Teknologi 1 (KT1), is embraced by the Production Technology Department based at Kompleks Teknologi 2, 3 and 4 (KT2, KT3 and KT4 respectively), on its left.  On its right is the Industrial Electronics Department at Kompleks Teknologi 5 (KT5).  KT3 also houses the Industrial Services and Consultancy (ISC) Department on Level 4.  The Director’s Office perched on the topmost floor of KT5 overlooks the entire campus.  Kompleks Teknologi 6 (KT6) is the chiller plant for the whole campus cooling system, run by NadiTech.

The trainee hub, between KT1 and KT2, offers the services of a convenient store, a café with wi-fi, a cyber café cum printing shop, the Student Representative Council (SRC) operations room and a CIMB ATM.
