GMI Robotics Team Secure Silver at ICGE-XI Innovation Competition

Kajang, 17 May 2025 – A team of budding Robotics Society from the German-Malaysian Institute (GMI) has claimed the Silver Award in the Innovation Computation segment at the International Conference on Global Education (ICGE-XI) online innovation competition. Their EDU-GRIP robotic learning module impressed judges in the University Students category, showcasing Malaysia’s growing prowess in educational technology innovation.

Students Innovators Behind the Breakthrough

Four Semester 4 Diploma in Mechatronics students; Ahmad Danish Danial Ahmad Hanafee, Danish Alfie Azrul, Abdul Mu’iz Abdul Mutalib, and Amin Nazim Aimi, developed this cutting-edge STEM education tool under the guidance of advisors Dr. Ahmad Hafiz, Dr. Sham Firdaus, Mr. Heidir, Mr. Afiq Fares, and Ts. Dr. Nazarul Abidin.

Transforming STEM Education Through Technology

The award-winning Educational Gripper for Robotics and Innovative Practice in STEM (EDU-GRIP) module bridges the gap between theoretical learning and practical application in robotics education features:

  • A silicone-based robotic soft gripper design
  • Five-Step Method for user-centric development
  • Function Decomposition for simplified engineering concepts
  • Precision 3D CAD modelling capabilities
  • Pneumatic drive system for realistic movement
Competing on the National Stage

Organized by the UKM-SHAPE at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, the ICGE-XI competition under its theme ‘Digital Transformation Fostering Sustainable Global Education’ attracted top student innovators nationwide. The virtual format enables global participation while maintaining rigorous judging standards.

    – This contest is open to secondary school students born between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2009.
    – Participants must follow at least one of the official social media accounts of the German-Malaysian Institute (GMI) to be eligible (Facebook, Instagram or Tiktok).
  2. Contest Participation
    – To enter the contest, participants must complete the quiz and submit their answers as instructed.
    – Participants are encouraged to create a unique and creative tagline related to GMI to increase their chances of winning.
  3. Agreement to Terms
    – By entering the contest, participants agree to abide by these terms and conditions.
    – Participants must ensure that their submissions comply with all guidelines provided.
  4. Prizes
    – Details of the prizes will be announced at the start of the contest.
    – Winners will be selected based on the accuracy of their quiz answers and creativity of their tagline.
  5. Selection of Winners
    – Winners will be notified through the social media platform where they entered the contest.
    – The decision of the contest organizers is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  6. Privacy
    – Personal information collected during the contest will be used for the purpose of this contest and promotional activities and will be kept confidential.
  7. Liability
    The organizers reserve the right to disqualify any participant who violates these terms and conditions or engages in any fraudulent activity.
