Kajang, 3 February 2026 – Six trainees have formally begun their 12-months journey to become certified Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) experts through the inaugural Program Anak Angkat Institut Latihan Kemahiran (ILKA): ROV Expert at the German-Malaysian Institute (GMI).

This specialised programme addresses a critical skills gap, preparing trainees for a high-demand niche profession vital to Malaysia’s offshore industries. They will be equipped for key roles in:
- Offshore oil and gas operations
- Deep-water and ultra-deep-water exploration.
- Subsea inspection, maintenance, and repair (IMR).

Trainees will gain direct, hands-on experience with live ROV systems and offshore operational protocols. The curriculum covers subsea navigation, control systems, hydraulics, and power systems, while instilling a rigorous understanding of offshore safety, reliability, and mission-critical operations. An international on-the-job training (OJT) placement will build global competency and ensure work readiness.
For the first two months, trainees will build a strong foundation in ROV systems in GMI, before proceed with the practical industrial training in Pasir Gudang, Johor, for four months. Trainees will complete OJT abroad, gaining experience with international offshore standards and advanced ROV operational competencies.
GMI is honoured to host this pioneering cohort, reaffirming its commitment to delivering high-quality, industry-driven training for reskilling and upskilling the national workforce. This programme is a strategic initiative to cultivate local, high-tech talent for the global offshore sector.
