Kuala Lumpur, 29 November 2025 – Four students from Kelab Inovasi Remaja GMI (KIRG) have claimed First Place at The Great Innovation Challenge: Reengineering Plastic for Impact. The team also secured an RM8,000 prototype development fund to support materials, fabrication, and testing.
Competing against 32 teams from 10 leading institutions across Malaysia, the GMI team impressed judges with their strong integration of compact mechanical design, which emphasised safety and maintainability while outlining a clear pathway for automation and AI-driven optimisation in the next phase.
Award-Winning Team
Under the supervision of Dr. Nor Afandi Sharif and Ms. Masni Mohd Yusof, the winning team comprised:
- Muhammad Zahrul Ikhmal bin Ismail – Semester 3, Diploma in Engineering Technology (Mechatronics)
- Pravin a/l Muruga – Semester 3, Diploma in Engineering Technology (Process Instrumentation and Control)
- Faris Zulhimi bin Mohd Rizal – Semester 3, Diploma in Engineering Technology (Process Instrumentation and Control)
- Hazim Hakimi bin Ghazali – Semester 3, Diploma in Engineering Technology (Mechatronics)
The team will now progress to Year 2: Prototype Development (January–May 2026), where they will build a functional prototype, integrate automation and optional AI features, conduct rigorous testing, develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and user manuals, and demonstrate their machines at the Final Demo & Award Ceremony at UTM Kuala Lumpur.
About the Innovation Challenge
This national programme, jointly organised by Great Eastern Takaful Berhad (GETB), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) through the Centre for Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (CAIRO), and the IEEE Kuala Lumpur Subsection, challenges students to redesign small-scale plastic recycling machines. The goal is to create smarter, portable and semi-automated system for upcycling HDPE and PP plastics into higher-value products.
This achievement highlights GMI’s strength in practical, sustainable engineering education and its dynamic innovation ecosystem, inspiring future students to develop technologies with real-world environmental impact.
