GMI Educator Received International Education Innovation Fund under ASEAN Research Collaboration Project in Australia

Kajang, 25 September 2025 – Ts. Dr. Ahmad Hafiz bin Mohd Hashim, an academic staff at Electrical Engineering Department, GMI, has been awarded a prestigious research grant under Round 2 of the ASEAN Research Collaboration Project. The Australian Government Department of Education awards this funding through its International Education Innovation Fund (IEIF), which the RMIT Asia Hub delivers in partnership.

This competitive programme specifically supports Early Career Researchers (ECRs) who have completed their PhD within eight years. It provides funded placements at Australian research institutions, with recipients receiving up to AUS$20,000 each to complete a one to three-month research placement.

Ts. Dr. Ahmad Hafiz will undertake his research placement at the University of Queensland, working on the project titled ‘Application of Ultra High Frequency (UHF) Sensor for Oil-Immersed Partial Discharge Diagnostics’. His research aims to examine the properties of partial discharge in oil utilising UHF sensor technology, a critical area for improving the safety and reliability of high-voltage electrical infrastructure.

The selection committee prioritised several key areas during the candidate assessment. The most significant factor was a clear and focused research project that outlined benefits to Australia and the potential to foster ongoing collaboration and commercial opportunities between the candidate’s home country and Australia. Additional criteria included an outstanding record of academic achievement, relevant research experience, and alignment with priority sectors offering high potential for shared commercial engagement between Australia and the ASEAN region. Candidates also had to demonstrate how the internship would further their academic or professional careers.

This achievement is set to significantly benefit the German-Malaysian Institute (GMI) by fostering future research, development, and innovation (R&D&I) activities and programmes.
