Nilai, 25 February 2026 – Advancing Malaysia’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) agenda through direct industry collaboration, the German-Malaysian Institute (GMI) formalised a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SGB MY Sdn Bhd.

This partnership builds upon initial engagements from June 2025, where the SGB MY team visited the GMI campus. This partnership solidifies a shared commitment to bridge the gap between education and industry. The collaboration will create tangible pathways for students, focusing on high-impact internship opportunities, industry-based apprenticeships, and direct employment pathways within the engineering and industrial sectors.
During the visit, GMI delegation toured SGB MY’s manufacturing facilities to observe operations and explore further areas for synergistic cooperation.
A significant highlight was the reunion with GMI alumni currently thriving at SGB MY, which underscores the practical, industry-ready skills of GMI graduates. The delegation met with:
- Mr Khairul Rizal bin Abdul Latib – Industrial Diploma in Production Technology specialising in Mould Technology, graduated from GMI in 2007. He is the Production Manager in Oil Immersed Transformers at SGB MY.
- Ms Wan Nur Hidayah binti Wan Muhammad – Industrial Diploma in Production Technology specialising in Tool & Die Technology, graduated from GMI in 2007. She is the Senior Engineer in Cast Resin Department at SGB MY.
- Mr Muhd Hazim bin Md Puat – Diploma in Engineering Technology (Sustainable Energy & Power Distribution), graduated from GMI in 2017. He is the Production Engineer in Oil Immersed Transformers at SGB MY.
- Mr Muhammad Soleh bin Ghazali – Diploma in Engineering Technology (Process Instrumentation & Control), currently undergoing his 6-month internship at SGB MY.

SGB MY Sdn Bhd is a prominent Malaysian manufacturer specialising in high-quality oil-immersed and cast resin electrical transformers, as well as compact substations. Established in 1994 and based in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, the company operates as a subsidiary of the German-based SGB-SMIT Group, a global leader with over a century of experience in transformer manufacturing.
This formalised agreement provides a strong foundation for sustained engagement, directly supporting Malaysia’s broader efforts to elevate TVET. By forging partnerships like this, GMI continues to equip its students with the practical, industry-relevant competencies demanded by a dynamic global economy.
