Strengthening International Academic Ties: Universiti Brunei Darussalam Conducts Technical and Engagement Visit to GMI

Kajang, 5 March 2026 – In a significant move to foster regional educational collaboration, a distinguished delegation from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) conducted a technical and engagement visit to the German-Malaysian Institute (GMI) from 3-5 March 2026. This visit focused on forging strategic partnerships in higher education and technical training.

Tuan Haji Ahmad Solihin bin Mohamed Yusoff, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of GMI, led the main discussion session with the UBD delegation.

Dr. Mohammad Khairul Zarifi bin Haji Awang Masri from the Office of the Assistant Vice Chancellor (Global Engagement) and the Applied Physics programme, Faculty of Science, led the delegation. Dr. Ong Wee Hong from the School of Digital Science and Dr. Muhammad Mu’az bin Haji Imran from the Faculty of Integrated Technologies accompanied him.

The primary objective of the visit centred on establishing robust institutional linkages between the two institutions. Discussions explored a wide array of collaborative ventures, including joint academic development, specialised technical training programmes, short-term student exchanges, and research partnerships. Both institutions also identified significant potential for creating international internship opportunities that would benefit students from Brunei and Malaysia alike.

To provide a comprehensive understanding of GMI’s educational framework, the hosts arranged an extensive tour of the institute’s Advanced Technology Centres. The delegation observed first-hand the industry-standard training facilities and the immersive, hands-on learning environment that defines the GMI technical education approach.

Beyond the formal discussions, the visit fostered cultural exchange. The UBD delegates participated in the Program Bubur Lambuk and attended the Majlis Iftar Perdana German-Malaysian Institute 2026/1447H. This engagement allowed the visitors to experience GMI’s strong culture of community and hospitality, further strengthening the interpersonal ties that underpin successful institutional partnerships.

The delegation participated in Program Bubur Lambuk and the Majlis Iftar Perdana German-Malaysian Institute 2026/1447H on 4 March 2026.

GMI looks forward to building a dynamic and enduring partnership with UBD, one that creates lasting value by bridging academia, nurturing talent across borders, and setting new benchmarks for technical education in the region.
