Kuala Lumpur, 13 May 2026 – The Vanta GMI team from the German-Malaysian Institute (GMI) has won the Grand Prize at the GREAT Innovation Challenge 2025/2026, held at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur. Their project, a TRL 7 Plastic Shredder & Injection Machine with AI capability, secured a RM12,000 grant.
Out of 32 institutions nationwide, only 12 teams were shortlisted, and just 5 received prototype grants. The Vanta GMI team secured the overall champion title through their impactful and scalable innovation, which transforms HDPE and PP plastic waste into reusable products using smart automation and sustainable manufacturing.
The winning team, supervised by Ms Masni binti Mohd Yusof and Ts. Dr. Nor Afandi bin Sharif, consists of:
- Muhammad Zahrul Ikhmal bin Ismail – Semester 4, Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering Technology
- Hazim Hakimi bin Ghazali – Semester 4, Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering Technology
- Pravin a/l Muruga Vanta – Semester 4, Diploma in Engineering Technology (Process Instrumentation and Control)
- Faris Zulhilmi bin Mohd Rizal – Semester 4, Diploma in Engineering Technology (Process Instrumentation and Control)
Their innovation showcases how AI and engineering can contribute directly to environmental sustainability and circular economy initiatives. The machine integrates artificial intelligence (AI) to automate the shredding and injection moulding process, converting plastic waste into reusable products efficiently.
The national challenge, launched in September 2025 by Great Eastern Takaful Berhad and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in collaboration with the Centre for Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (CAIRO), focused on sustainability and AI-driven solutions to real-world problems.
As a premier TVET institution under Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), GMI continues to produce students with strong hands-on capabilities, technical competency, and the ability to turn engineering ideas into real-world solutions.
Congratulations to the Vanta GMI team!
